TSA Tanzania Call for Volunteers

The Tanzania Startup Association (TSA) is a not-for-profit, membership-based organization representing over 800 startup members, primarily youth-owned businesses, across Tanzania. By working collaboratively with government institutions, academia, development partners, and private-sector organizations, TSA aims to foster innovation, create jobs, and drive economic growth. Startups in Tanzania are leveraging emerging technologies to address challenges in key sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and education while contributing significantly to the nation’s development. Building on the success of previous reports, TSA’s Tanzania Startup Ecosystem Study 2024/25 aims to provide actionable insights to inform policies, catalyze investment, and support the ecosystem’s growth on a global scale.

We invite passionate individuals to join the Tanzania Startup Ecosystem Study 2024/25 as research assistant volunteers. Volunteers will assist with data collection (questionnaires, interviews, focus group discussions, and desk research) and data analysis (geographic, financial, survey, and benchmarking data) and report writing.

This is an opportunity to contribute to a transformative initiative that influences national policies and strategies while gaining valuable experience. If you are ready to make an impact, apply now and be part of this groundbreaking study shaping Tanzania’s startup future!

OBJECTIVES

The study’s overall objective is to track, assess, and quantify the growth and developments of Tanzania’s entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem to inform the annual status and performance for 2024. Furthermore, the study utilises data to draw insights that guide the formulation of interventions aimed at addressing challenges and maximising identified opportunities. Specifically, the study aims to:

  1. Identify and present critical developments, including existing challenges, opportunities, and reforms implemented in 2024 to address these challenges and capitalise on opportunities.
  2. Identify and profile key ecosystem actors to track the ecosystem’s growth in 2024, highlighting their roles in bridging identified gaps and strengthening the entrepreneurial landscape.
  3. Propose actionable policy and non-policy recommendations for further interventions to address challenges, unlock opportunities, and promote sustainable growth across the startup ecosystem.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study will focus on engaging stakeholders from the Tanzanian mainland and Zanzibar, ensuring balanced representation across the country.

Although the research team will not travel nationwide, TSA will leverage its network of regional partners and collaborators to collect localised data and insights. This decentralised approach allows for efficient and inclusive data collection while maintaining the study’s relevance to the diverse dynamics of the Tanzanian startup ecosystem.

The Tanzania Startup Association (TSA), in collaboration with key stakeholders across the Tanzanian startup ecosystem, will conduct this study. These stakeholders include the Ministry of Information, Communication, and Information Technology (MICIT), the Ministry of Investment, Industry, and Trade (MOIP), the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), and the ICT Commission (ICTC).

Additional contributions will be sought from government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), development partners, higher learning institutions, research organisations, entrepreneurship and innovation support organisations (EISOs), private sector players, investors, and key ecosystem actors such as entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and angel investors. This diverse collaboration ensures that the study captures a broad spectrum of perspectives, making it inclusive and comprehensive.
